The new movie was great for capturing the "feel" of one of the more adventurous TOS episodes. They messed up Kirk, Spock, and Uhura but everyone else was perfect. They also changed the Phasers into something LESS science-y, while the Photon Torpedoes lost their punch in favor of shooting lots of them. (I hated that) Warp Drive isn't their primary propulsion anymore (I hated that too...) But the film was FAR better than Star Trek: Nemesis.

Final Analysis: Off-beat, pleasently and unpleasently, but nonetheless, a STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

Stop being such fanboys. I keep expecting one of you to say, "In episode 4 of season 3, it was established that..."

The simple explanation is that the original series interpreted the story of Kirk's original 5 year mission as best as the technology could imagine at the time. The upgrades made in the movie aren't much different than the version of TOS that came out 2-3 years ago with jazzed up special effects. The ships and effects in the movie are just an interpretation of the same time using what's possible with today's technology.

Admit it, if they went with the '60s bridge, effects, et all, it would look incredibly hokey.

How can they possibly call it a movie based on the origins of the characters when the ship is ten times more sophisticated than the original series. They made a huge mistake by not "dumbing down" the ship.

I have read your post and all I have to say is why? Why make this movie to begin with? I feel that Star Trek does not need a reboot. And just for the record I hate reboots. Why not just make another movie with a new ship with a new plot and off you go. Make a movie with the Borg we all like the Borg. I just don't understand. I will go see it not because it is a Star Trek movie but because it looks good. But I will do what I always do with movies that try to ride a name (like Dragonball and Godzilla) I will call it something else and enjoy the movie for what it is and not what it tried to be!!

I find your comment that the Enterprise looks dated and from the 60s interesting. Every other scifi ship design from the 60s that I can think of was either based on Hitler's V-2 or else a flying saucer. The refit Enterprise from STTMP made all the changes necessary to update the unique, classic design from the TV series (blue deflector, streamlined engines, spiffy paint job). Even so, the original 'bussard collector' effect (spinning fan over intermittent multicolored lights) was magic and indicated tremendous harnessed energy in a way the later movie models did not.

The new bridge set appears very busy. The two images above are very revealing. The old design used shape and color to make a statement. In fact, the design of the old bridge set jumps out at you--you instantly 'get it' and how it works. Not so, the new design. It reminds me of those 1960s sets like 'Time Tunnel,' where you see banks of blinky-lights randomly placed here and there to indicate technology. To me that just indicates lack of design and vision.

I hope it's better than it looks in the trailer.
